We use a variety of research techniques, but the one we’re best known for is dial testing. Here’s how it typically works: We arrange our clients’ messaging and their critics’ messaging as a point-counterpoint video exchange—one that we show to focus group respondents. These respondents use wireless handheld dials to react to the messages, moment-to-moment. On a continuous basis we measure how strongly the audiences agree or disagree with it on a zero-to-100 scale.
Based upon the dial feedback and the conversations that follow, we analyze the information we’ve gathered and refine our clients’ messages, working closely with them. We then test the new messaging, gather additional insights, submit a detailed report of our findings, and make further actionable recommendations based upon this knowledge.
